Meet Mija Serrano, LPC

Virtual Counselor in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

My name is Mija

I am passionate about helping people just like you learn how to thrive through the ups and downs of living in today’s world.

I’ve created a space that is built to hold all of the joys, frustrations, milestones, and surprises that we encounter on this journey called life. I am especially fond of helping caregivers connect with their inner calm, confidence, and courage as they enter the wild and beautiful unknown of building a family.

I’ve worked to create the kind of warm, non-judgmental therapy space where I’d want to find myself as a client—where you can talk about all of the difficult and shadowy emotions you’re experiencing, learn new tools and skills that will help you flourish, and explore what it means to be your most authentic self.

I made this space for folks who are tired of being overwhelmed, hopeless, frustrated, and full of self-doubt.

Honestly, I made it for you.

My approach to therapy

It’s important you find the therapist who works for you.

My clients describe me as warm, compassionate, and validating. I help my clients make sense of the past, so they can choose the future they want. I do this by creating a space where you are welcome to express yourself freely without fear of judgment, and by offering tools, education and sometimes a new perspective on your situation to help you reach your goals.

When we work together, we will:

  • Help you understand how your thoughts impact the way you feel and act

  • Explore ways to help you feel better in the long-term

  • Practice tools and skills that will help you manage big feelings in the moment

  • Help you come to a deeper understanding of who you are and where you’re going in your life

My Story

I am no stranger to the challenges of living with anxiety, trauma, and the overwhelm of being a new caregiver.

Following the birth of my first child, I experienced what I now know to be postpartum anxiety. For the first couple of months, I didn’t know what was happening to me. Once I started to feel worried about leaving the house, I knew it was time to get a therapist for myself.

A few years later, while pregnant with my twins, I was hospitalized at 35 weeks with preeclampsia. There, I had an emergency C-section, and as I was being carted away to the ICU for low blood pressure, my newborns were brought to the NICU for a week.

This was not the birth story I envisioned for myself. It was traumatic, and created a sense of despair rather than joy.

The journey since has been a bittersweet, winding road, and with it has come all new difficulties, joys, and fears. As a mother of four, a twin myself, and wife of a twin, I’ve experienced my fair share of caregiving struggles and successes: from the restless nights and frustrations over splitting household labor, to the joyful first moments and learning how to balance family life with the demands of a non-stop world, I am no stranger to the ever-changing whirlwind that is life.

It’s from this experience of all the joy, rage, pain and excitement of being a mom, wife, and complex human being that I find my calling as a therapist. My passion for this work has brought me to many beautiful and deeply impactful roles as a professional. I started my career in early head-start, making home visits to pregnant mamas and caregivers with babies up to 3 years old. Since then, I’ve worked as a birth doula and postpartum doula, which I found invigorating and enlightening. I’ve also had experience working in an OB clinic, providing care for caregivers who struggle with substance use, and I have experience working with families, individuals, and children.

I feel honored every day by the opportunity I’ve been given to walk alongside my clients as they work toward healing, empowerment, and a new lightness in their lives. After years of working in community mental health where it seemed quantity was valued over quality, I was burnt out and not feeling satisfied with the quality of therapy I was providing. So after consultation from other professionals and colleagues, and a lot of internal debate and deliberation, I was ready! Mija Serrano Counseling, LLC, was born!

It’s from these experiences that I’ve crafted a practice that is small—on purpose!  I want the very best version of me to show up for every single one of my sessions. My clients deserve nothing less.

Through it all, I am grateful for the life I have and the work I do.

When I am not with my clients, some of my favorite things include exploring new places, meeting new people, all things movement, and being outdoors in nature. Laughter is my medicine, and you can often find me smiling and chuckling. I love spending time with my family and friends and creating new, amazing memories! I’ll never turn down a good cup of coffee, avocado toast, or any spicy food!
